About NewImpact

It started with a penny. Jens Molbak’s idea was to make it easier for people to cash in their spare change. Coinstar was born. As a young founder, Jens began to understand the transformative potential of tri-sector solutions. As CEO, he was driven create a company that both gave to and benefited from the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. By applying the tri-sector approach, Jens scaled Coinstar into a billion-dollar company that continues to thrive today.

Since its founding, Coinstar has processed billions of dollars, raised more than $150 million for nonprofits, and saved the U.S. and UK government billions—all while increasing spendable cash power. After the success of Coinstar, Jens realized tri-sector thinking and subsequent business models could be applied to many types of organizations, with great potential to transform society. In 2021 Jens founded NewImpact.

A humanity-benefit nonprofit 501(c)(3), NewImpact is dedicated to changing the way the world finds opportunities and solves problems. By promoting tri-sector thinking and building specialized tools, we help doers catalyze and scale innovation faster. Creators quickly discover that repurposing resources and aligning interests from the private, social, and public sectors has the potential to supercharge ideas. Tri-sector innovation results in faster progress and greater impact for people and the planet.

Our goal ultimate goal is for Tri-Sector Innovation to be as widely accepted and practiced as Design Thinking, Agile Development, or Human-Centered Design.
